Laptop batteries such as Apple Laptop Battery , Asus Laptop Battery or Dell Laptop Battery utilize a chemical reaction to provide power. The energy flow goes one direction when discharging, or powering the laptop, and the opposite direction when charging. The most common type of laptop or notebook battery used today is lithium-ion. A lithium-ion battery is so named because lithium ions moving from negative to positive provide power. Compared to older technologies such as NiCad and NiMH batteries, Lithium-Ion does not exhibit the "memory effect" which could sometimes cause batteries to prematurely lose capacity if they weren't properly discharged. Lithium-Ion batteries also have a better power to weight ratio than previous laptop batteries. Li-ion batteries have a few disadvantages as well. Over time, deposits form inside the electrolyte, which diminishes the battery's capacity. This is the main reason Li-ion batteries eventually lose charge capacity and need to be replaced
